The latest
edition of Harper’s Magazine came in the mail yesterday. The cover story is about the end of retirement
(as we have known it) and how there is an entire population of people over 65
who live entirely in their RVs and travel around the country doing seasonal
work. One of the nicknames for these silver-haired
gypsies is “Okies of the Great Recession.” There are currently an estimated 7.7 million Americans 65 and over who are still in the work force.
The article
was very powerful and certainly affected me.
I have been too busy raising kids to really try to envision my
retirement years, but I know that due to the crash of 2008 life in my household
is still not the same and what retirement savings we had no longer exists. It seems as if our house will NEVER be paid
off. Yet, we have a home and we are not
65, or even close to it. There is still
a little time to come up with a plan. A
retirement plan. I am hopeful that as we
get closer to retirement age, the plan that is in place will include AMC. It has certainly served some of my Upliners
well in their retirement, I know that.
